New tools for predicting material deformation behavior: Slip orientation difference and twin orientation difference

Slip and twin are the two most important deformation modes of metallic materials. The transmission of deformation between different grains is also one of the important mechanisms of plastic deformation in polycrystalline materials. Whether it occurs and the way it is transmitted directly affect the mechanical properties of the material. The complexity of the grain stress state and grain boundary structure during the deformation process makes it difficult for people to directly perceive the actual process of metallic materials, and even more difficult to conduct predictive analysis. By relying on or creating some models or physical quantities, expressing them in a concise and precise form has become a necessary means for people to understand the deformation process.


During his tenure at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Researcher Zhao Zibo from Xigong Titanium Yuhua Research Institute conceived three concepts of orientation difference: phase transition orientation difference, slip orientation difference, and twin orientation difference. They have now been sorted out. The three can serve as mathematical tools for predicting the deformation transfer behavior between grains and the selection tendency of phase transformation variants, assisting researchers in approximating the essence of deformation and phase transformation behavior or understanding their statistical laws, which is conducive to the theoretical improvement of the study of plastic deformation and phase transformation processes. More practically, visual models of the above-mentioned physical quantities have been developed, which can be directly applied to the reverse design of material structure and texture.


The research results were published in the Journal of Liaocheng University (Natural Science Edition) under the title "Two Physical Quantities That Can Be used to Describe the tendency of grain deformation transfer: Slip orientation Difference and twin orientation Difference". Researcher Zhao Zibo is the first author and corresponding author of the paper. This work was supported by the National Major Science and Technology Project.
